Whole House Repipe in Indianapolis

If your house was built before 1985, there is a good chance the original supply lines are still in the walls and getting close to the end of their useful life. Galvanized steel rusts from the inside, polybutylene fails without warning, and old copper develops pinhole leaks when the water chemistry is off. DW Plumbing handles whole-house and partial repipes across Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Greenwood, Noblesville, Lawrence, and surrounding areas.

Signs You Need a Repipe

You do not always have to wait for a flood to know.

  • Discolored, rusty, or metallic-tasting water
  • Low water pressure that has gotten worse over years, not days
  • Recurring pinhole leaks in copper supply lines
  • Banging, knocking, or rattling pipes
  • Lines that you know are galvanized or polybutylene
  • A leak that just got repaired in one spot, then another, then another
  • Insurance refusing to renew because of pipe material

If a single repair feels like one of an inevitable series, it is. The cost of three or four spot repairs over a year is often most of the way to a full repipe.

What Materials We Use

PEX. Cross-linked polyethylene. Flexible, freeze-resistant, fast to install, and has decades of field history. The right choice for most modern repipes in central Indiana. PEX-A is what we install most often.

Copper. Long-standing, code-accepted, fire-resistant. Costs more, takes longer to install, but some homeowners prefer it for visible runs or specific aesthetic reasons.

We do not push one over the other. We tell you what each costs, what each does well, and what each does poorly, and you decide.

What Gets Replaced

A whole-house repipe replaces the supply lines from the main shutoff out to every fixture. That includes:

  • Hot and cold lines to every sink, tub, shower, and toilet
  • Lines to the water heater, washing machine, and dishwasher
  • Hose bibs and outdoor connections
  • Branch runs through walls, ceilings, and crawl spaces

Drain lines are a separate job. If your drains are also failing, we will tell you, but a supply repipe and a drain replacement are quoted separately.

The Repipe Process

A typical repipe takes 2 to 5 days depending on home size, accessibility, and material.

  1. In-home estimate. We walk every fixture and accessible run, identify scope, and quote in writing.
  2. Permit. Pulled before work begins.
  3. Run new lines. We minimize wall openings by using attic, basement, and crawl space routes wherever possible.
  4. Cut over. New lines go live, old lines are abandoned in place where appropriate.
  5. Pressure test and inspection. Required by code.
  6. Patch and repair. We coordinate drywall patching or leave it for your preferred drywall contractor, your call.
  7. Final inspection. City signs off, job is closed out.

We protect floors and furniture, contain dust, and clean as we go.

How Long Does a Repipe Last?

Per the EPA’s drinking water guidance, modern PEX and copper supply lines installed correctly are expected to last 50+ years. The galvanized that came out of the wall did not last that long because the technology in 1965 was not what 2026 technology is.

What a Repipe Costs

The honest answer is “it depends,” and we do not give phone quotes for repipes because we cannot see your house from a phone. The variables are home size, number of fixtures, material chosen, accessibility, and finish work scope. What we will tell you on the phone is the realistic range and what makes a job land at the high end vs. the low end of it.

FAQs

Will my walls be torn up?

Some openings are unavoidable. We minimize them and locate them where patching is easy. A typical repipe is 8 to 15 small access cuts, not whole-wall demolition.

Can I stay in the house during a repipe?

Yes. Water service is interrupted only during specific stages, typically a few hours per day. We coordinate that around your schedule.

Do you handle the drywall repair?

We can coordinate it, or you can use your own drywall and paint contractor for the finish work. Many homeowners prefer the latter.

Is a partial repipe a good idea?

Sometimes. If you have a clear failure point (one wing of the house, one bathroom group), partial makes sense. If pinholes are showing up in multiple areas, full repipe is usually the better dollar.
