Sump Pump Installation, Repair, and Replacement in Indianapolis

Indianapolis basements work hard. Spring storms, clay-heavy soil, and high water tables mean that for most homes around here, the sump pump is the only thing standing between you and a finished-basement disaster. DW Plumbing installs, repairs, and replaces sump pumps across Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Greenwood, Lawrence, and the surrounding area, and we run service 24 hours a day during heavy rain events.

Sump Pump Repair

Most pump failures fall into a handful of categories.

Pump runs constantly. Either the float is stuck, the check valve has failed, or the pump is undersized for incoming water volume. We cover the diagnostics in detail in our maintenance article on a sump pump that runs constantly.

Pump will not turn on. Usually the float switch, the power circuit, or a tripped GFCI. Sometimes the impeller is jammed.

Pump runs but does not move water. Air-locked, clogged inlet, frozen or clogged discharge line, or impeller failure. The discharge line is the single most overlooked cause and the one we see most often in winter when the exterior outlet freezes.

Smoking sump pump. A smoking pump is at the end of its life and should be unplugged immediately. Continuing to run it risks a melted housing and water damage.

How to know if your pump is healthy. We have a separate maintenance guide on how to know if a sump pump is working or starting to fail that walks through the at-home test.

Sump Pump Replacement

A pedestal pump typically lasts 25 to 30 years. A submersible runs 7 to 10. If your pump is at the end of its expected life, replacing it before it fails is dramatically cheaper than replacing it during a basement flood. We replace primaries, install secondaries, and add battery backups in a single visit.

When we replace a pump, we also evaluate:

  • The discharge line for proper slope, freeze protection, and termination
  • The check valve (most failed pumps have a failed check valve too)
  • The pit itself for sediment and debris
  • The dedicated electrical circuit and GFCI

Sump Pump Installation

For homes that do not currently have a sump pump but should, we handle the full install: pit excavation, pump selection, discharge line routing to a code-compliant outlet, electrical, and battery backup. Whether a sump pump is required depends on local code and your specific lot, but for most central Indiana homes with finished or partially finished basements, the answer is yes. Our local insight on whether you need a sump pump in Indianapolis walks through the decision.

Battery Backup Systems

Power outages happen during exactly the storms that cause flooding. A battery backup pump is not a luxury here. We install AC and DC backup systems that automatically take over when primary power fails, and we size them based on how long your pit can run on battery alone.

Discharge Line Issues

The discharge line gets less attention than the pump itself, and it shouldn’t. A clogged or frozen discharge line can fail a perfectly good pump. We service:

  • Frozen exterior outlets
  • Sediment-clogged interior runs
  • Improperly sloped lines
  • Code violations from past DIY work
  • Termination too close to the foundation

For a deep dive on this, our guide to a clogged sump pump discharge line is one of the most-read articles on the site.

What It Costs

Pump replacements fall in a predictable price range based on pump horsepower, whether you need a primary, secondary, or backup, and what condition the discharge and electrical are in. We quote everything before work begins.

FAQs

How often should a sump pump be tested?

Every 3 months, plus once before each spring rain season. Pour a 5-gallon bucket of water into the pit and listen for the pump to engage and clear it.

Are sump pumps required by code in Indianapolis?

Code varies by jurisdiction. Most modern homes with finished or below-grade living space have one whether required or not. Per FEMA’s flood mitigation guidance, having an active sump system is one of the lowest-cost flood protection investments a homeowner can make.

Can I install a sump pump myself?

You can. Most homeowners who try end up calling us to redo the discharge line or fix the electrical. The pump is the easy part.

How long does an install take?

Replacement of an existing pump: 1 to 2 hours. New install with pit excavation: 1 day.
